I am continually fascinated by the intersection of sculpture and painting, and the potential for the viewer to question which they are seeing. This piece was originally created for a show at SAM Gallery at the Seattle Art Museum, and experiments with that push and pull with LEGO inspired forms. The background is meant to emulate flat Simpsons-esque LEGO brick clouds. At the same time the top of the wood panel features sculptural knobs in direct proportion to an actual LEGO brick. All of it fits under the guise of a slice of a bright high-key summer day. 

My character ZERO, this time in basketball form, is a reminder to me of how fun it is to discover something totally new – when I could just be a kid embracing an adventure and moving towards the things that lit me up, and before I understood the concept of “keeping score”. 

When I first sketched ZERO I wanted him to hold some of that story, and I knew there were so many other forms he could take. In a sense he’s meant to infuse that fun and curiosity into any genre or experience. I’m excited for ZERO to keep showing up in my work, and I hope that he can be an anthem for the concept of pure play.
