Space Monkey, AKA Fight Club Soap (Limited Edition Print)
"Space Monkey, AKA Fight Club Soap" is a print of the painting done for the Crazy 4 Cult show, a 90’s cult movie group show at Gallery 1988 in Hollywood.
As cult movies go, it’s difficult to think of one that struck a nerve for me more than Fight Club. Rather than use iconic soap from the movie poster, I wanted this piece to be geared more towards those of us who have seen the movie more times than we can remember.
Below are some of the secrets it holds.
- To create the still life I used for reference for the piece I designed the label for the soap and then sculpted the soap out of wood. I think placed the Super7 Planet of the Apes figure on top of the sculpture.
- Paper Street Soap Company was the name of the soap business.
- The action figure is Cornelius from Planet of the Apes. Cornelius was one of Edward Norton’s aliases at his support groups in the movie. “Without pain, without sacrifice we would have nothing. Like the first monkey shot into space. Space Monkey!” -Tyler Durden
- Smiley face on the label = the symbol of Project Mayhem
- 1999 was the year Fight Club was released.
