Orange Crush - Atomic Elbow Drops is painting #5 in the Canned Lightning Series. The figure atop the Orange Crush soda can is Macho Man Randy Savage, a legend of WWE wrestling fame. By combining the wrestling figure and the graphic typography of “Crush”, it speaks to a time of carefree summers and the mayhem of pro wrestling in the 80’s.
In the Canned Lightning series, memories and the flavor of this time are sampled and yield a modern remix of past and present intertwined in a fresh but familiar way. A recurring subject in my work is gravity defying objects that are seemingly adrift in a colorful void and in this series it is the cans. The “lightning” in the can creates an energetic lift for the rider of the can. Each figure is on their own journey fueled by this lightning, with clues hidden in the typography that hints at their unfolding adventures.
