This piece marks the first time one of the ZERO characters has the burst trailing behind it. It signifies not only movement, but represents the fragments of the past that we carry with us. Where we're from. Our journey. Our story.
“ZERO”– What’s in a name? As a kid my sketchbook and basketball were both a means of escape and creative exploration. Whether it’s learning to play a sport or how to paint, the universal starting point of any endeavor is ZERO. To me, the character is a reminder of where this all started – a kid enthusiastically embracing an adventure and working towards the things that light them up. When I first sketched ZERO I wanted him to hold some of that story, and while he started as a basketball…I knew there were so many other forms he could take.
The baseball version of the character is nicknamed Rally. In baseball, the term rally means to mount a comeback and score multiple runs to take the lead late in the game. The term resonates with me because it is associated with a “never give up” sense of optimism that can be applied to life outside of the confines of sport. It is a reminder to keep pushing forward even when the odds may be stacked against us.
